What is pickleball open play?

Open play is the drop-in format that makes pickleball so easy to fall in love with. You don't need a fixed partner, a reservation, or a set time slot — you just show up during an open play session, join the queue, and get matched into games with the other players who are there.

The trouble is that running open play by hand is chaotic: paddle stacks fall over, whiteboards get erased, and someone always ends up sitting out too long. PaddleStack fixes that — players scan in, games are built automatically from the live queue, and the rotation keeps moving, so everyone spends less time waiting and more time on the court.

How open play works with PaddleStack

1

Scan in and join the queue

Walk into any open play session, scan the session QR code to check in, and tap to join the queue — no reservation, no sign-up sheet, no host calling names.

2

Get auto-matched

PaddleStack builds balanced games from everyone in the queue — by queue order, party, and (optionally) DUPR skill level. Fair games, every round.

3

Play when your court is ready

Get a notification the moment your court opens up. No hovering by the net, no guessing whose turn it is — just a tap and you're on.

4

Rotate and play again

When your game wraps, tap to rejoin the queue and PaddleStack lines you up for the next match — fair rotation, all session long.

Open play FAQ

Open play is a drop-in format where players show up without a fixed partner or reservation and rotate through games with whoever is there. Instead of booking a court for a set hour, you join a shared queue and get matched into games as courts free up — it's the most popular way to play recreational pickleball.

PaddleStack replaces the paddle stack and whiteboard with an app. Players scan in and join the queue, the app builds balanced games from the live queue, and sends a notification when a court is ready. After each game players rejoin with a tap, so the rotation keeps moving without anyone managing a clipboard.

Yes — the PaddleStack app is free for players on iOS and Android. Download it, create a profile in under a minute, and you're ready to join open play at any venue using PaddleStack.

No. Open play with PaddleStack is drop-in. Walk in during an open play session, scan the session QR code to check in, and join the queue. There's no reservation and no sign-up sheet.

Yes. Use the Party feature to queue with up to three friends, and PaddleStack places your group on the same court whenever possible — so you can come together and play together.

PaddleStack matches players using queue order, party groupings, and optional DUPR skill ratings to build balanced, competitive games. Skill matching enhances open play but never gates it — all levels are welcome.

Absolutely. Venues use PaddleStack to run open play with far less manual work — players self-check-in, matchmaking is automatic, and admins get a real-time view of every court and queue. Reach out at support@paddlestack.com to bring it to your courts.

Court rotation is how open play keeps everyone playing fairly: when a game ends, players rejoin the queue and the next group rotates onto an open court. PaddleStack tracks who's waiting and builds the next matches in fair queue order, so the rotation keeps moving.
